Haydn’s Missa in tempori belli (Mass in Time of War) reflects the emotion and drama of its time and place – written in Austria at a time when the country was losing its war against France and feared invasion. It’s also called Paukenmesse (Timpani Mass) for its dramatic use of this instrument.

Beethoven’s Mass in C was commissioned by an Austrian prince whose family had previously employed Haydn as its music director for many years. Arguably the greatest and most innovative composer of the classical/romantic period, Beethoven nonetheless worried mightily about following in Haydn’s footsteps – and indeed, the prince himself was not pleased with the work. But other critics praised its directness and emotional appeal, with one describing it as the “expression of a childlike, serene mind.”

Spaulding describes Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, only about 3-1/2 minutes long, as a gem – tranquil yet captivating. “It takes genius to do this, and we are in the presence of genius here,” he says.

Following the concert, the audience is invited to an informal reception to meet and chat with the conductor, soloists, orchestra and chorus members while enjoying some delicious refreshments, a long-standing Hudson Chorale tradition.
